There is a widely held belief that members of the greatest generation, particularly WWII veterans, do not talk about their personal experiences. After talking with Pearl Harbor survivors, however, the truth emerges: you have to ask. To ensure first-hand accounts from Pearl Harbor live on, this Veterans Day the Pearl Harbor Survivors Project (www.pearlharborstories.org) encourages Americans to Ask. Learn. Share in conjunction with the 65th Anniversary Commemoration of December 7, 1941.
On Friday, November 10th, the Pearl Harbor Survivors Project will honor WWII veterans by hosting live Internet Webcasts with Pearl Harbor survivors at 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. ET, and by offering Americans access to noted Pearl Harbor historian, Daniel Martinez, through a new “Ask Dan†blog. The Pearl Harbor Survivors Project is accepting advance questions for both the live Webcasts and “Ask Dan†at www.pearlharborstories.org.
This is a unique opportunity for Americans not only to interact with Pearl Harbor survivors through the live interview, but to actively participate in preserving history for future generations.
Webcast participants will be asked to register at www.pearlharborstories.org. Once registered, they can submit type-written questions for survivors. Pearl Harbor survivors will broadcast their responses to visitors’ questions by video, offering a more intimate experience.
All participants are encouraged to share something they learned as a result of the discussion, or to ask follow-up questions about the Pearl Harbor experience using “Ask Dan.â€
Questions, answers and comments from each Webcast will be recorded and made available on the Pearl Harbor Survivors Project site (www.pearlhaborstories.org) for visitors who do not participate in the live sessions and to preserve Pearl Harbor history for future generations.
Pearl Harbor survivors scheduled to participate in the Webcasts at 12:00 and 3:00 p.m. ET on Friday, Nov. 10th, include:
• Captain Norman Lancaster, U.S. Navy, retired—Lancaster is a 92-year old Pearl Harbor veteran who served on the U.S.S. Phoenix. He was also an original member of the U.S. Jag Corps.
• Commander Theodore Sawick, U.S. Navy, retired—Sawick is an 89-year old Pearl Harbor veteran who boarded the U.S.S. Ramiford where he became an ad-hoc gunman fighting the Japanese on December 7, 1941.
• Chief Warrant officer and Master Marine Superintendent Jay Groff, U.S. Army Air Corps, retired (now the U.S. Air Force)—Groff is an 87-year old Pearl Harbor veteran who was fighting the Japanese on land from Hickham Field.
