On Sunday morning I had my breakfast and was looking for an iron to press my whites before going on liberty. I heard a commotion and went out on the forecastle to see what it was all about. It took only a few minutes to realize that it was an air raid. Being a pointer on the 6" guns, it was my duty to go down into the magazines to get anti-aircraft ammunition up to the machine guns. It didn't take long for us to fire back at the raider. In the course of two raids our ship was credited with 3 "kills." As one of the planes that had been strafing went by our ship, I saw the pilot eye-to-eye as he went by! And I saw the "meatball", as we called the rising sun, on the side of his plane. I knew then that it was an enemy plane. Whenever we had practice runs, the planes approached at a slow speed. This plane went "whoosh!" and disappeared. We had no time to get ammunition before this, but went below to the magazine immediately to retrieve ammunition for the anti-aircraft guns. This was the first attack. After the second attack a 25 caliber bullet hole was discovered in the galley. The men found the bullet and patched the hole much, much later. We left the harbor just before noon on the 7th and came back in on the 10th of December.
